Tips to Grow Your Twitter Following

Customize your Twitter page

I don’t think spending a lot of time customizing the look of your Twitter page is critical, however don’t keep it bland. If you have a great picture on your last vacation, put it up there. Later on, you might want to try something like Mytweetspace, to add some more customization to you page.

One customization that I do recommend is Bubbletweet. If you have a webcam or a video camera, I definitely recommend going to Buddle Tweet. It’s only 30 seconds long, but it can really set you apart from the crowd. Check out the founder of Bubble Tweets, Kevin Sherman. It’s very cool stuff.

Auto follow and auto welcome

When I was first learning about Twitter I was doing everything manual. It became very time consuming.I would get an email that someone was following me, and then I would follow them back. I would send out Direct Message to tell them about a blog or my Facebook page. This just takes too much time. I later learned about Tweetlater. This system can really help you automate some of this process and save you valuable time. Tweetlater has a Step by step guide to help you through this process. Make sure to automatically follow and to auto welcome new followers. This will really save you time.

Manage your Tweet conversations

Download and use TweetDeck. TweetDeck is a great way to organize your tweets. You can easily find hot topics, shorten web links, and follow you @replies.  This is one of the main tools I use to communication with others on Twitter. It's a great tool.

Now explode your following

  • Add 250 people per day. Look for individuals that have a large following that are active and follow their followers. Not all of these individuals will follow you back, so that is why you need to look for quality. Also make sure you follow those that also follow back. Try to get the number of followers and the number of individuals that you follow close to the same number.

A good resource to find people with large lists is, http://twittercounter.com/?inc=100. Find the individuals that follow back most of their followers unless you really like someone like Lance Armstrong or Britney Spears.

  • Converse with at least 25 individuals per day. You do this by using the @Replies with TweetDeck or within Twitter itself. Remember to be positive, friendly, and sociable. Engage your audience and your following will grow.
  • Some individuals just will not follow you back. Get rid of them. It can look bad if you are following 10,000 individuals and only 500 are following you. To remove those that are not following you, go to http://twitter.com/friends. You can tell if they aren’t following you because you won’t see the words “Direct Message” under their name. Another tool to help manage your followings is FriendOrFollow. This site helps you manage your followings and who you follow.

Tweet Getter

This is a very controversial tool, but it works. Some recommend it and some don’t. I would advise to use this tool at your own risk. Instead of explaining Tweet Getter, I’m going to just send you to another site by Mike Klingler so he can describe it.
